Where Do You File for Divorce in Washington?

When you’re filing for divorce in Washington, you may choose to file in the county where you live or where your spouse lives. (Wash. Rev. Code §§ 4.12.025, 26.09.010(2) (2022).)

If you’re filing in Pierce County and are handling the divorce yourself (without a lawyer representing you), you may file your papers in person. Bring your completed divorce petition and other forms to the Superior Court Clerk’s office listed above. You can find links for the Superior Courts in other counties on the Washington Courts directory.

You also have the option of filing your divorce forms electronically, through the court’s eFiling system.

When Do You Need to Call or Visit the Court?

In addition to when you’re actually filing your divorce papers, you might have reason to call or visit the court clerk’s office or website at different times during your divorce proceedings, such as when you want to:

• verify the current filing fees for divorce papers (which were $314 as of 2022, with all of the surcharges) and the forms of payment that are accepted
• ask about any local forms or requirements in addition to the statewide forms
• inquire about the Impact on Children Seminar required in Pierce County for all parents in divorce proceedings, or
• submit additional documents in your divorce case after you’ve filed the initial paperwork.
